![]() “Curve and Light” is a bleeper banger with a kicking bassline that progresses into a psychedelic wonderland. “Gameun Deut” similarly conjures strong imagery: in this case, a jaunty stroll through a bustling market. The rest of the album never hits the peaks of these songs, but it damn well tries. Then it hits the final wind, a wave of ecstasy rolls in, and washes out into a puddle of awe. The song feels like progressing through a pleasant drive through a rolling mountain range, and as the song hits the bridge, it pauses to admire the view, taking in the beauty of the world. ![]() As the tension of the song builds with increasingly hyperactive blips and a downright beautiful glockenspiel melody, it transforms into a twirling bliss, filled to the brim with warm, fuzzy “ohh”s and distant synths. It opens with some delicate guitar strumming reminiscent of Animal Collective’s Sung Tongs. The second track, “These Chains,” scales even higher peaks. The song continues to build and build until it feels like there’s nowhere else to go, but right as it reaches peak euphoria, it folds in on itself and deconstructs into a wonderfully freeform bundle of synthesizer bleep-bloops. Chills shot down my spine, and this was the moment I realized Crumbling would be so much more. A laser beam launches the song into the stratosphere. Crooning over a delicate and quiet guitar melody, Mid-Air Thief sneakily convinces the listener that Crumbling will be just another subdued and fragile folk album, but just as the listener gets comfortable, the song subverts expectations. The album opens with “Why?”, an unassuming ambient passage of distant-sounding yet remarkably familiar sound effects. Despite this, Crumbling manages to feel cozy- almost musical comfort food. comfort., another out-of-nowhere album hailed for its seamless mesh of dream pop and bizarre glitchiness. ![]() It strongly calls back to Sweet Trip’s impeccable velocity. The mystery shrouding this album demonstrates how this album is truly a testament to the power of sound.Ī beautiful crossroads of Grizzly Bear and the freshest production tricks Bandcamp has to offer, Crumbling overwhelms with its immense power and irresistible melodies. And I have no knowledge of anything about Mid-Air Thief or the guest vocalist, Summer Soul, other than that they created Crumbling, one of the finest albums of 2018. I have no knowledge of what the lyrics mean. Even after some intensive Google searches, I have no knowledge about where this album came from.
